Young Singaporeans enjoy a day of sporting fun
It was meant to be a day of sporting fun for the young ones. And more than 200 sportsmen and their supporters thoroughly enjoyed themselves at YSA’s Under-15 and Under-12 football tournaments held at St George’s Estate on 5 September 2004.
In an effort to involve young Sikhs as well as youth groups of other ethnic groups, each team was allowed to have up to three non-Sikh players out of the six registered players. Several other teams were also invited. The aim, besides encouraging a healthy, sporting lifestyle, was to bring the youngsters from various ethnic groups together to socialise and interact with each other
Braving the rain, the 10 teams in the Under-12 and the 14 teams in the Under-15 categories entertained the spectators with some exciting football matches during the tournament. Played in the first half of the day, the Under-12 event saw Gabrielites putting up a sterling performance throughout the tournament and eventually winning the final against Yaari. The Under-15 tournament, played in the afternoon, was a more closely contested event. Eventually, Marsiling Zone 8 “A” triumphed in the final against Vain.
The keenly competitive players displayed great sporting spirit and camaraderie throughout the day. Both the players and parents enthusiastically expressed their desire for more such events so that they could meet and enjoy themselves.
